Big Picture
The series is in hand but having faced a lot of criticism since he was appointed captain last year, Shoaib Malik will be keen to complete a whitewash to boost the side's confidence ahead of India's tour of Pakistan early next year. The first two matches have been fairly close, with West Indies holding the edge at half-time. A nerveless performance from Kamran Akmal, when his side needed 17 off the last over, gave Pakistan the series lead while a disciplined and tight performance from the seamers handed them the series win. It's now time for the others to step up.

West Indies are not unfamiliar with a series whitewash, having lost 5-0 to Australia at home only five months back. But they head to New Zealand in December and will prefer to have a win under their belt before tackling the month-long tour. Players from both sides will want to use the dead rubber to make a case for selection for future series.

Watch out for
Saeed Ajmal: He dropped two catches off Shivnarine Chanderpaul but also picked up a wicket while bowling an economical nine overs for 38 runs. He made his ODI debut against India in the Asia Cup and will be keen to make the squad for the five-match one-day series against the same opposition in February 2009.

Sohail Tanvir: He troubled the West Indies batsmen by swinging the ball both ways and dismissed the openers, Chris Gayle and Sewnarine Chattergoon, for ducks in the second game.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul: He averages 84 in his previous 10 ODIs but his only century in those games came in Friday's loss. He will hope for another big score, preferably one that will not only keep him on top of the run-getters list but also hand West Indies a consolatory win.

Pakistan are unlikely to change a winning combination despite it being a dead rubber. Saeed Ajmal is likely to keep his place over Fawad Alam, who went wicketless in the first match, as is Iftikhar Anjum, who was unlucky not get more than one wicket in the second ODI - Chanderpaul was dropped off his bowling. Malik said Shoaib Akhtar was struggling with a calf injury and his fitness will be assessed ahead of the final match. But Pakistan would not want to risk straining Shoaib in a match that holds no consequence for them.

Although Nash is more of an accumulator than a one-day dasher, Gayle may want to give him some experience before the Test tour.

India took the honours on day two in Mohali, amassing 469 and then putting Australia under extreme pressure by claiming four wickets before stumps. Sourav Ganguly, who scored his 16th Test century, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni batted in contrasting fashion to force Australia on the defensive, and debutant Amit Mishra struck twice to maintain the intensity created by India's new-ball pair.

Ganguly, who had struggled in the series against Sri Lanka, put on 109 for the seventh wicket with Dhoni to maintain the advantage built on the first day. Ganguly fell for 102 but Dhoni continued to attack, forcing Ricky Ponting to spread his field far and wide. Australia's bowlers struggled to make breakthroughs and most of their wickets came when India tried to up the momentum.

There was a lot of speculation before the series began that Ganguly wouldn't survive four Tests, but he is a man few can predict. Not long after lunch, he tucked Cameron White off his pads towards deep midwicket boundary and indulged himself. His hundred-watt smile and fist-pumping celebration was far from smug; and it seemed it was meant more for himself than anyone else. He had scratched his way into the nineties, while Dhoni entertained at the other end with powerful pulls and drives, and his celebrations signified the achievement of a personal goal.

Ganguly batted with restraint in the morning, watching the ball carefully, playing late, and letting several deliveries pass outside off. He batted 122 deliveries yesterday, and wasn't about to throw it away. He didn't thrust the bat much, took the short-pitched deliveries on merit, and nudged the singles around. He began by pulling Brett Lee for four but was also made to look ungainly by other bouncers. His concentration never wavered.

Taking a leaf out of coach Gary Kirsten's book - keep out the straight ones and try to ignore the others unless you can cut or drive - Ganguly was an almost unnoticeable accumulator. His second century in Mohali came 11 years after his previous one here, and like that hundred against Sri Lanka, this was scored at a strike-rate of just over 45.
Ganguly's stodgy approach, however, was complemented by Dhoni's aggression. He pulled his first ball - a short one from Lee - for four and then hooked Siddle for six before turning his attention back to Lee for two more fours in an over. Repeatedly getting inside the line of the short deliveries, Dhoni picked off runs into yawning leg-side spaces at a steady clip. He also waited for the ball, steering backward of point and driving in the V. His running was, as always, excellent and he urged Ganguly to be alert as well.

Batting remained easy, with no swing or variable bounce to speak of, and the two contrasting approaches from Ganguly and Dhoni frustrated Australia in what was almost a perfect morning for the home team.

As has been the case in the past, a shuffle down the track just after a hundred was Ganguly's undoing and Lee tumbled backwards at long-off to take the catch. The wicket was against the run of play, but Dhoni didn't let it hinder him. He passed 1500 Test runs, brought up his 10th fifty with a six over long-on, and hit three more later. He was the last wicket, lbw for 92, and gave the persevering Siddle his third wicket.

The Australians had spent nearly five sessions in the field and, when it was their turn to bat, Zaheer Khan ensured that Matthew Hayden did stay very long under the hot Mohali sun. He nailed Hayden for the third time in three innings - and seven overall - by forcing an inside edge on to the stumps with his third delivery.

A short while after tea, Ishant Sharma had a close shout against Ponting which Rudi Koertzen turned down. A few balls later another sharp inswinger hit Ponting on the pad, and this time he was on the back foot, leaving Australia 17 for 2. Zaheer and Ishant attacked through their opening spell and the change to spin didn't release the pressure.

Mishra's 18th ball in Test cricket resulted in a wicket. Katich, who had gone to 33 with some soft-handed strokes, played on. Mishra tied down the batsmen by mixing googlies with flippers and pitching them on a length. The spinners turned the ball sharply; Michael Hussey had one thick edge bypass slip and was reprieved by Dhoni on 25 off Harbhajan Singh. Hussey rode his luck to 37 by stumps, looking on as Mishra struck in the last over of the day, hitting Michael Clarke on the pad with a googly from round the stumps. India were without Anil Kumble in this game but Mishra has filled the gap impressively so far.

India's bowling efforts will, however, be a postscript. This was Ganguly and Dhoni's day.

Story
Although its Mideast trappings have become terribly familiar in any number of recent movies from Syriana to The Kingdom to director Ridley Scott’s own Black Hawk Down, William Monaghan’s (The Departed) tight script still has pertinent things to say about the lies and deceptions inherent in our covert operations in the region. Cloaked in a cat and mouse thriller format, the story centers on Roger Ferris (DiCaprio)--a top CIA operative, fluent in the Arab language-- who roams from country to country trying to penetrate top secret terrorist cells and uncover plans for mayhem. In trying to smoke out a shadowy terrorist who has been directing a series of key bombings against civilian targets in Europe, Ferris comes up with the ingenious idea to create a phony rival group that appears to be taking credit for the “real” Al Qaeda-type organization’s business. Complicating matters for Ferris is his boss, Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe), back at CIA headquarters, who sees the world in black and white and believes there is no such thing as going too far to achieve goals in the best interest of the U.S. Both must also deal with the head of Jordanian Intelligence, Hani Salaam (Mark Strong), who recognizes that each is useful for his own counter-terrorism efforts.

Acting
There are a LOT of explosions that keep getting in the way of the dramatics--and much of the Crowe/DiCaprio teaming is played out on opposite sides of a phone line. But Body of Lies incorporates a first-rate cast, including many local Middle Eastern performers who make strong impressions. Crowe--adopting some sort of quasi-southern accent (apparently from Arkansas)--creates an amusing CIA boss who sees the world from one perspective--his. Juxtaposing his duties to family as well as America, Crowe creates a full blooded portrait of a husband, father and CIA lifer who thinks he knows all the answers. His few scenes when he is face to face with co-star DiCaprio are worth the wait and both stars play off each other with ease. DiCaprio is back in Blood Diamond territory here as a rogue operative using his own ingenuity to make a difference. His on-screen command of some Arabic phrases is unforced and impressive and he earns the audience’s empathy , particularly when he winds up in well over his head. There are also some nice scenes opposite a Muslim nurse he strikes up a relationship with while in the hospital. Iranian star Golshifteh Farahani is beautiful and nicely understated in these moments. Strong, who also is very fine in another of the week’s new releases, RocknRolla, is suave and powerful as the shrewd Jordanian Crowe and DiCaprio cross swords with. Other regional actors fill out their roles with uncommon authenticity.

Direction
There can be no question Ridley Scott is a master of the film medium. Body of Lies moves very well and thanks to the Scott style manual has lots of urgency. Employing his usual use of multiple cameras getting simultaneous angles in every scene, Scott doesn’t rely on actors having to do a lot of takes and in the process manages to give the film a documentary kind of feel. Although the filmmaking approach sometimes leads to more confusion than we would like, it also puts us right in the center of the action. And there’s plenty of that. Working for the fourth time with Crowe, the two clearly have a rapport and similar seat-of-the-pants way of working, which DiCaprio seems to have picked up nicely. If this isn’t as impressive an overall achievement as Black Hawk Down, it’s still an entertainment that is a cut above some of the other recent spate of Middle East-set thrillers. Locations are well used too, with Northern Africa and specifically the Moroccan environs filling in for the some dozen countries identified on the screen.

More Than Enough: The full movie of Uwe Boll’s Postal

I have heard from multiple sources — including three deities — that Uwe Boll’s latest film Postal isn’t worth the time it takes to break through the Fort Knox DVD packaging that it comes in — in you know the one, with the two little clippy things. But needless to say, I am constantly drawn to all things Boll — the man fascinates me to no end. Why? Because he continues to make movies the way he wants to make them, and people like Dave Foley (pictured above) continue to take their pants off in them. And whether or not the movies turn out to be a pile of excrement or not, that is an accomplishment that is lost on many of Hollywood’s director-types.

That said, I was obviously drawn to the following video embed, which shows off the first 11 minutes of Postal. And though it doesn’t show any of the scenes with Osama Bin Laden and George Bush skipping through a grassy meadow together, it does give us more than enough of the Boll experience for one day. Union Cabinet may approve Sixth Pay Commission report today

New Delhi, Aug 14 : The Union Cabinet is likely to put its seal on the Sixth Pay Commission Report, which was tabled in the Parliament earlier this year, but not implemented till now.

A high level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh last evening discussed the pay panel report and the recommendations of the empowered committee of Secretaries that went into the anomalies and other issues.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister AK Antony and Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram attended the meeting.

The Prime Ministers is likely to make an announcement regarding the implementation of the Pay Commission Report during his Independence Day speech on Friday.

It is expected that the Pay Commission would result in an increase of around 1.83 times of the net pay for the defence personnel, though details regarding the amendment to the report are not clear. It is likely that civil servants may also get a substantial raise.

The new pay scales, if implemented, will cost the exchequer Rs 7975 crore in fiscal 2008-09. However, the one-time additional outgo on account of the retrospective revision of salaries is estimated to be Rs 18,060 crore. The arrears are to be given in installments.

The Sixth Pay Commission Report, submitted by Justice B N Srikrishna on March 24, had recommended an effective 28 per cent salary hike for an estimated 4.5 million Central Government employees.

Expressing resentment over the report, armed forces personnel had demanded a better deal considering the hardship factor involved in their services, followed by protest rallies by retired personnel. The three service chiefs also lobbied with the Defence Minister.

The Government then set up a high-powered committee headed by Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar to look into the anomalies pointed out by different sections of the government servants, including those from the defence services. (ANI)

After a rain-aborted workout against Scotland on Monday at least gave a resurgent Andrew Flintoff the chance to impress, England face South Africa at Leeds for the first ODI.
The South Africans will prove a different kettle of fish for Kevin Pietersen and company given that the tourists are fresh from a 2-1 Test series win - their first in England in almost half a century.
In addition, England must do without Ryan Sidebottom, who has been ruled out with a hip problem, while Chris Tremlett is also suffering with a heel injury. Paul Collingwood will be in the middle of his 4-match ban and will be unavailable as well.
With England's last 15 one-day outings having brought only five wins South Africa are favourites to win the five-match ODI series which follows on from Wednesday. Nonetheless, with Flintoff getting back in the groove following his Scottish figures of 3-21 England have everything to play for.
Pietersen has meanwhile promoted Owais Shah to number three in the one-day team's batting order - although the rain in Edinburgh precluded the Middlesex batsman from getting an early chance to shine.
"Owais is going to bat at number three for the simple fact that I think he was wasted at number seven," explained Pietersen. "He's a high-scoring, quick-scoring cricket player who plays cricket shots to get boundaries and I think down the order he was wasted.
Pietersen has also pushed the recalled Matt Prior to the top of the batting order and, while it was Flintoff who caught the eye with Monday's three wickets, the skipper said that his overall strategy was now starting to fall into place.
"It's key now to identify players and roles in the team. I've identified how I want to play and it's a case of getting the confidence in the players to do what they need to do and that's what I'm prepared to do.
Meanwhile, South Africa will see the back of Herschelle Gibbs. Albie Morkel has been ruled out with a shoulder injury but brother Morne should play despite a niggling sidestrain injury. ODI specialists like JP Duminy, Vernon Philander and off spinner Johan Botha are also going to be part of the mix.

DAMBULLA, Sri Lanka (Reuters) - India opening batsman Virender Sehwag has been ruled out of the one-day series against Sri Lanka after injuring his ankle in training.

India's leading batsman in the test series, Sehwag twisted his ankle in training on Sunday and missed the opener of the five-match series a day later, a contest India lost by eight wickets.

Sehwag will return home and a decision on whether to send out a replacement has yet to be made.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni admitted the loss of the in-form opener was a major blow.

"He was a batsman in top form but that's the way it goes in cricket," Dhoni told reporters.

India are already without talismanic batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who has an elbow injury.

Sanath Jayasuriya: The last time he played India, Jayasuriya cracked a match-winning 125, his sixth ODI hundred against them. Jayasuriya relishes playing the Indians - no one has scored as many runs against them as he has - and even more so at home, where he averages 46.44 at a strike-rate of exactly a run a ball. His record in Dambulla isn't as impressive - an average of 26.23, with just one half-century in 15 innings - but against India he'll fancy his chances of turning that around.

Yuvraj Singh: has announced he is in peak form for this series with an astonishing 121-ball 172 in the practice match against a Sri Lankan XI. The absence of Sachin Tendulkar places an even greater burden on Yuvraj, who will be keen to prove he can handle that responsibility as well as tackle the mighty Sri Lankan spinners.

Sri Lanka have packed their squad with nine batsmen, which means three will probably miss out. Kumar Sangakkara had opened the batting through most of the Asia Cup, and he could do so again, allowing the team to slot in five specialist bowlers, with Chaminda Vaas coming in at No. 7. Sixth Pay Commission has been set up to revise the pay scales for the following category of employees

(a) Central government employees – industrial and non-industrial
(b) Personnel belonging to the All India Services
(c) Personnel belonging to the Armed Forces
(d) Personnel of the Union Territories
(e) Officers and employees of the Indian Audit and Accounts Department
(f) Officers and employees of the regulatory bodies set up under Acts of Parliament.

Persons working in private companies are getting paid much more. I can agree that they work a lot and offer a good value of work for the money paid to them.

Indian government employees should be offered decent salary based on the work they are doing.

It will be good to keep the age of retirement at 58. Making it 60 isn’t a very wise decision while many government departments came up with VRS scheme recently. Chance should be given to the young generation. Most of them are only working in some private companies or have left India for better wages abroad.

The sixth pay commission may cause a big burden on government, but the employees have not seen revision for pay scales for a long time.

Sixth Pay Commission Report May Bring Cheers To Central Govt Employees

The eyes of the central government employees will be firmly glued on the forthcoming 6th Pay Commission Pay Scale, which is likely to be announced on Friday, Aug 15.

The central government has sanctioned the setting up of the sixth pay commission to revise salary structures plus other perks for its 5.5 million staff across the country.

The sixth pay commission is estimated to cost the government an additional Rs 20,000 crore.

The Centre assured that the sixth pay commission report would be "beneficial" for the employees as administration is keen to provide comprehensive and fine salary packages to attract quality human resource.

The upcoming pay commission would give recommendations regarding the pay structure of government employees including industrial as well as non- industrial central government employees, all-India services, armed forces personnel and employees in the Union Territories.

Moreover, the commission would consider the pay structure for Indian audit and accounts department, regulatory bodies established by Acts in Parliament and Supreme Court employees.

Normally, a central government employee’s total salary comprises a basic salary, a 51% dearness pay along with basic and a 41% dearness allowance of the total.

The sixth pay Commission will result in a hike of 28% in basic salary of central government staff in various categories. The central 6th pay commission scales may also help employees to fight with the growing inflation.

The expected pay scale table of the sixth pay commission pay structure may also result in a decent increase in the salaries of employees working in private sector.

A high level meeting on Wednesday led by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh along with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister AK Antony and Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram discussed the pay commission information and the suggestions of the empowered group of Secretaries that entered the anomalies and other subjects.

A senior Union minister said that Cabinet is ready to sanction the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations today.

The commission had recommended several changes like staggered timings for women, introduction of performance related incentives, forcing central para-military services to recruit personnel from ex-servicemen after they complete 17 years of service in the armed forces and cutting down the number of gazetted holidays after nearly 17 days to three.

Pay Commission recommends hefty increase in salaries of government employeess

New Delhi, Mar 24 : The Sixth Pay Commission headed by Justice B. N. Srikrishna has recommended a hefty increase in salaries with effect from January 1, 2006 for as many as 4.5 million central government employees.

The Commission�s recommendations, submitted to Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram this morning, would cost the exchequer Rs 12,561 crore in 2008-09 and impose an arrear payout burden of Rs 18,060 crore on the Government.

The pay panel proposals revised pays that fixed the salary of the Cabinet Secretary at Rs 90,000 a month and a Secretary at Rs 80,000 per month, while making Rs 6,660 as the minimum entry level salary.

The existing House Rent Allowance (HRA) rate has been retained for A-1 cities while it is higher by 20 per cent for A, B-1 and B-2 cities. For C and unclassified cities the allowance is higher by 10 per cent.

The report recommends that City Compensatory Allowance (CCA) be subsumed in Transport Allowance, and the rate be increased by four times. In other changes, travel is to be paid on actual.

The Commission also suggested a 40 per cent increase in pension and family pension.

The panel placed the military services' pay on par with those recommended for civilians, while suggesting an allowance of Rs 6,000 per month for officers till the rank of Brigadier and equivalent.

"A scheme of Performance Related Incentive Scheme (PRIS) has been recommended. PRIS should also work as a substitute for bonus, honorarium and overtime allowances," the report said.

The Finance Ministry will consider the report and will submit its recommendations to the Union Cabinet.

While Chidambaram did not announce any provision in the Budget for the increased wage bill in 2008-09, he had maintained that there was enough head-room to meet the additional expenditure. (ANI)

Increase in salary not a disruption for state finances: Montek

Montek Singh Ahluwalia has said that an advance on salaries of state government employees would not seem to disrupt state finances.

”I don't think that the impact of this disruption is going to be all that crucial,” he said on the possible impact of adoption of the Sixth Pay Commission award by the state governments.

The report is likely to be submitted by early April.

“The state governments would be under pressure to revise the salary of state employees once the Pay Commission submits the report. Pay Commissions are constituted once in 10 years and blind adoption of the Pay Commission award by the state governments will not be a good idea,” Ahluwalia said.

“Since the Dearness Allowance (DA) does not adequately take care of inflation, the government was made to affect a big increase in salaries of its employees at the end of 10 years. So at the end of 10 years, the government will be benefiting from a squeeze in real pay because the DA was never enough... So you have a big increase," he said.

In anticipation of the Pay Commission recommendations, the Railway Budget has made an ad hoc provision of Rs 5,000 crore for 2008-09 to meet additional liability towards employees and pensioners. (ANI)

by the inflation. All countries are facing economic problems due inflation. He emphasized that world is in middle of a dramatic change in the world price distribution. Hence Indians should get used to the high energy prices.

"Controlling inflation is a short term challenge and would not affect growth rate on a medium to long term basis," Ahluwalia said, adding, "Though this fiscal, we may see a slightly lower growth rate... at about 8%... or a little less than that, say around 7.9%... that is not bad," he said.

However, he added, "If properly handled, inflation should not affect average growth objective of 9%. He said that surging oil prices have pushed up inflation not only in India but also in other countries.

The commission was constituted in October 2006 to recommend changes in salary structure of the government employees.

"The Commission is to finalise and submit its report within 18 months of its constitution, that is 4th April, 2008," Bansal told Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

Commenting on the implementation of the commission's recommendations, Bansal said that as the report was yet to be submitted "the time frame for its implementation cannot be stated."

Talking about media reports that there would be a good hike in salaries of civil service staff, the minister said that it might be speculative. (ANI)

Tilak Puraskar

PuneMontek Singh Ahuwalia, Aug 1: Planning Commission Deputy Chairman and noted economist Montek Singh Ahuwalia will be awarded with “Lokmanya Tilak Puraskar” here today for his contribution to the country’s economic growth.

The award includes a gold medal, a citation and Rs one lakh.

Earlier, Chairman of Lokmanya Tilak Trust Deepak Tilak had said, “Ahluwalia would be awarded on the death anniversary of the freedom fighter Balgangadhar Tilak whom the British described as the ‘father of Indian unrest’”.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde will be present on the occasion.

Ahuwalia who assumed the post in 2004, has also worked as an additional secretary to former premier Rajiv Gandhi between 1985 and 1990.

India To Achieve 9% GDP Growth By Next Five Years, Says Montek

Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia said Montek Singh Ahluwalia that India has to attain its objective of 9 percent
GDP growth within the next five year regardless of economic slowdown.

While addressing the convocation function of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), he said, “We are well set to achieve the target of nine per cent growth rate in the next five years.”

"There is a talk in newspapers about slowdown of our economy. There is a slowdown, but India seems poised to have sustained growth for a long period," he said.

Ahluwalia stated that the IIM-A graduates that they are passing out of the top B-schools at a time when India is rising quickly.

He said more advanced technical education institutions have the need to uphold the country's economic development.

Ahluwalia also told that the Centre had also announced the establishment of new IIMs and IITs, which is really a good step forward.

"These institutes should be set up as fast as possible." Ahluwalia said it also required to guarantee growth of subsisting higher educational institutes.

The Centre has made an evaluation committee to inspect the performance of IIMs, and it would be a good chance for these institutions to obtain what they wish for, he said.

On government’s role in present circumstances, he said, It is sometimes said the economic reforms have reduced the role of government. But it is not the case. The role of the government has not been reduced but transformed. It is good the government is not running business which private parties can do."

"Government has now become a growth facilitator. It has to look after social development and infrastructure.

Consumer Price Index Will Also Come Down, Says Montek Singh Ahluwalia

Mumbai: A top Government functionary said that the inflation rate based on the wholesale-price-index dropped, and the consumer price index (CPI) would also go down.

Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission said, “The wholesale price index (WPI) operates with a two-week lag and the CPI with a three-month lag....CPI will also come down.”

Mr. Ahluwalia said that bringing inflation down was a key sign of macro-economic success and the RBI has done this extremely well.

For the week ended September 8, inflation rate has dangled to 3.32 per cent from 5.22 per cent in the corresponding period of the last year (2006).

Point-to-point inflation rate, which is based on the CPI-AL and CPI-RL augmented from 8.60 per cent and 8.02 per cent in July to 8.80 and 8.51 per cent correspondingly during August.

Asked about Chidambaram’s acoustic projection of a 10 per cent GDP growth, the well-known economic expert stated, “continuing the (economic) reforms process, we can take the economy to 10 per cent growth at the end of the 11th Five Year Plan period (2007-12).”

ASEAN urged to hold emergency summit on food security

Manila- Leaders of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) must hold an emergency summit to address the looming food shortages in the region, a senior Philippine legislator said Saturday.

Senator Mar Roxas said the 10-member grouping must come up with concerted efforts to address the issue of shortages in staple food and runaway prices of basic commodities.

ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

"ASEAN has in its membership the world's two biggest rice exporters and the world's biggest rice importer," Roxas said in a statement.

"The proposed summit has the opportunity to ease the fear and the crisis that is gripping both the producing farmers and consumer families across the ASEAN and the region," he added.

Roxas said the summit can include ASEAN's partners like China, South Korea and Japan and multinational financial institutions that have interests on "both the consumer and the producer sides of the current crisis." (dpa)

Inflation Surges To 12.44 Pc

The wholesale index-based inflation rate is further increased to 12.44 per cent. It was Inflation Surges To 12.44 Pc recorded 12.01 per cent in the previous week. The inflation rate was 4.39 per cent in the corresponding period in 2007. The growing rates of food, fruits and fuel prices have contributed in the increased inflation rate.

The prices of fruits increased by 8.9 per cent for the week ended August 2. The prices of maize, moong, urad and other spice went up by 4 per cent and 3 percent respectively. The prices of textile and cement were also increased during this week.

The finance ministry has expressed concerns over the ever increasing price rate. It apprehended further rise in inflation after the implementations of recommendations of 6th pay commission. The government has decided to increase the salaries of center government employees from August 15. The salary hike will further put pressure on exchequer by Rs 21,000 crore. The finance ministry has termed this price rise as shocking because the prices remained stable during last four weeks.

The former Chairman of Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council C Rangarajan has also expressed concerns over price rise. He said that the price rise can touch 13 per cent in near future. Some other economists also blamed turbulence in some parts of country for price rise.

NHRC asks West Bengal Government to submit report on Nandigram

New Delhi, Nov 12 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today issued a notice to the West Bengal Government directing it to submit a factual report on the conditions prevailing in Nandigram within 10 days.

The Commission is also sending its own team to the disturbed areas "to study the situation and suggest remedial measures", NHRC officials stated.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has also been asked by the Commission to take all necessary steps to restore peace in the area, and has been asked to submit an action taken report within two weeks.

The move by the Commission comes, as situation in Nandigram remains tense with incidents of gunfiring reported almost daily.

The area remains cut-off from the rest of the country with CPI (M) cadres and activists belonging to Trinamool Congress party supported Bhumi Uched Praitirodhi Committee continue fighting for control over the surrounding areas.

The Commission had received messages from different social activists, including Medha Patkar, who was allegedly attacked by CPI (M) cadres in the State when she tried to enter Nandigram.

"Patkar had expressed fear that the gherao of Nandigram might lead to serious and unprecedented bloodshed. She had expressed apprehension whether the State government would be willing to stop the violence or not," a release issued by the Commission stated. (ANI)

Inflation Rate Declines Marginally To 11.89%

The wholesale price index (WPI)-based annual rate of inflation stood at Inflation Rate Declines Marginally To 11.89%11.89 per cent for the week ended July 12, marginally lower than the 11.91 per cent reported in the previous week.

Inflation was 4.76 per cent during the corresponding week a year-ago.

According to official figures, the moderation was due to fall in prices of food items like potato, maize, sea fish, tea and imported edible oils, though other commodities like coffee, fruits and vegetables, mutton and certain pulses like urad, moong and arhar became expensive during the week ended July 12.

On a week-on-week basis, the WPI rose to 239 for the week ended July 12, from 238.7 in the previous week, prompting the finance ministry to say that inflation remains stable.

RBI is expected to raise CRR rate by 25-50 basis points next week from 8.5%, in order to cool knock-on effects of higher fuel prices.

Asia's security forum urges ASEAN, China to keep peace in Spratlys

Singapore - Asia's main security forum on Thursday urged the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China to expedite the formulation of guidelines governing the conduct in the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.

The ministers attending the 27-country ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) encouraged all countries which stake claims on the area to exercise self-restraint.

They noted that while the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in South China Sea of 2002 (DOC) was effective in building mutual trust and confidence among claimant countries, the ministers urged the "expeditious" formulation of guidelines to implement the document.

"They reiterated the hope that ASEAN and China would expeditiously conclude the guidelines on the implementation of the DOC," said Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo, outgoing chairman of the ASEAN.

The Spratlys group of islands straddles key shipping lanes in the South China Sea and are believed to be rich in oil, marine and mineral resources. It is considered a potential flashpoint in the region.

Medha Patkar on a 48-hour hunger strike for peace in Nandigram

Kolkata, Nov 10 : Social activist Medha Patkar today began a 48-hour hunger strike demanding Central government’s intervention to restore peace in the violence-hit Nandigram in West Bengal’s East Midnapore District.

Patkar, joined by the representatives of Forum of Artistes, and other social forums, including groups of cultural activists and intellectuals, is demanding withdrawal all cadres, apparently belonging to the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), from Nandigram.

Patkar, whose convoy was allegedly attacked by CPI-M supporters when she was on her way to Nandigram on Thursday, met Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Friday and submitted a memorandum demanding "urgent intervention by the Governor as well as the Government of India to open up Nandigram by ensuring withdrawal of siege and stopping outsiders from entering."

Patkar also alleged that the police there behaved in a partisan manner.

She has also called a mass rally on November 14 without any political banner.

Meanwhile, the CPI (M) state committee is holding a meeting on Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi’s statement on Nandigram violence issued on Friday.

Gandhi termed as “unlawful and unacceptable” the manner of recapture of villages in Nandigram that has become a “war zone”.

“The manner in which the recapture of Nandigram villages is being attempted is totally unlawful and unacceptable,” the Governor said in a statement to the media without naming the CPI-M-led State government.

There are reports of forcibly recapture of most areas in Nandigram.

A new turf war between the CPI-M cadres and Trinamool Congress workers has already claimed four lives, besides leaving thousands homeless and dozens injured.

Earlier, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed concern over Nandigram violence and asked Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil to look into it urgently.

Nandigram has been the scene of recurring clashes since January resulting in deaths, including 14 in police firing and violence on March 14 when villagers resisted the police from entering.

Sporadic clashes between rival groups have continued despite the State government's decision against the setting up of a chemical hub in the area in the face of protests from a section of the people there. (ANI)

in 2008-09 and impose an arrear payout burden of Rs 18,060 crore on the
Government.

The pay panel proposals revised pays that fixed the salary of the
Cabinet Secretary at Rs 90,000 a month and a Secretary at Rs 80,000 per
month, while making Rs 6,660 as the minimum entry level salary.

The existing House Rent Allowance (HRA) rate has been retained for A-1
cities while it is higher by 20 per cent for A, B-1 and B-2 cities. For
C and unclassified cities the allowance is higher by 10 per cent.

The report recommends that City Compensatory Allowance (CCA) be
subsumed in Transport Allowance, and the rate be increased by four
times. In other changes, travel is to be paid on actual.

The Commission also suggested a 40 per cent increase in pension and family pension.

The panel placed the military services' pay on par with those
recommended for civilians, while suggesting an allowance of Rs 6,000
per month for officers till the rank of Brigadier and equivalent.

"A scheme of Performance Related Incentive Scheme (PRIS) has been
recommended. PRIS should also work as a substitute for bonus,
honorarium and overtime allowances," the report said.

The Finance Ministry will consider the report and will submit its recommendations to the Union Cabinet.

New Delhi, Aug 14 : The Union Cabinet is likely to put its seal on the Sixth Pay Commission Report, which was tabled in the Parliament earlier this year, but not implemented till now.

A high level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh last evening discussed the pay panel report and the recommendations of the empowered committee of Secretaries that went into the anomalies and other issues.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister AK Antony and Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram attended the meeting.

The Prime Ministers is likely to make an announcement regarding the implementation of the Pay Commission Report during his Independence Day speech on Friday.

It is expected that the Pay Commission would result in an increase of around 1.83 times of the net pay for the defence personnel, though details regarding the amendment to the report are not clear. It is likely that civil servants may also get a substantial raise.

The new pay scales, if implemented, will cost the exchequer Rs 7975 crore in fiscal 2008-09. However, the one-time additional outgo on account of the retrospective revision of salaries is estimated to be Rs 18,060 crore. The arrears are to be given in installments.

The Sixth Pay Commission Report, submitted by Justice B N Srikrishna on March 24, had recommended an effective 28 per cent salary hike for an estimated 4.5 million Central Government employees.

Expressing resentment over the report, armed forces personnel had demanded a better deal considering the hardship factor involved in their services, followed by protest rallies by retired personnel. The three service chiefs also lobbied with the Defence Minister.

The Government then set up a high-powered committee headed by Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar to look into the anomalies pointed out by different sections of the government servants, including those from the defence services. (ANI)

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram receives Sixth Pay Commission report

The Sixth Pay Commission headed by Justice B. N. Srikrishna today submitted its report to Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram presumably recommending a 40 per cent hike in salary for the central government employees.

"I have recommended something for the good of the country. The Finance Minister will give the latest highlights," said Justice Srikrishna.

Over 4.5 million central government employees are expecting a bounty from the report which is likely to recommend major changes in salaries and terms of employment, including performance-linked pay and incentives.

"A senior secretary gets Rs 52,000 as monthly salary. I do not expect it to go up to more than Rs 60,000. Salaries of top officials will not be more than that of governors," a secretary-level official of the Central Government said.

The hike, which is with retrospective effect from January 2006, was necessitated by the fact that members of Parliament were drawing Rs 68,000, more than the Vice-President, who is the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

In his budget speech last month, Chidambaram had said the pay panel’s recommendations would meet the legitimate expectations of government employees. The railway budget for 2008-09 has kept aside Rs 50,000 million for implementing the Sixth Pay Commission's recommendations for its 1.4 million employees.

According to budget estimates of GDP for 2008-09, the financial impact of the proposal has been estimated to be within 0.4 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which amounts to about Rs 2,10,000 million.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh held a meeting with defence minister A.K. Antony and finance minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday, regarding the pay commission recommendations for Central government employees, armed forces employees as well as paramilitary staff.

A senior Union minister stated that Cabinet is ready to sanction the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations today.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will declare the award during his Independence Day speech on Friday, August 15.

Around 5.4 million government workers will get their pay increases and the administration will have to distribute an additional Rs 20,000 crore.

The armed forces were sad with the new pay structures but now sources said that a compromise has been made between the administration and the services.

The government has accepted the demands of the defence forces.

But it's a bit less than the 15% extra they demanded earlier.

So, if in April the promised hike for a colonel was Rs 15,000, now it's going to be about Rs 19,000.

Bonanza For 50 Lakh Govt Employees

On the eve of country’s 61st Independence Day, the UPA government under the Bonanza For 50 Lakh Govt Employeesleadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sanctioned a wage hike higher than the recommendations of Sixth Pay Commission for the country’s civil and defence staff.

After the meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister made the announcement that there would be an average increase of 21 per cent in salaries of over 50 lakh government employees with effect from January 1, 2006.

Briefing media persons information and broadcasting minister P.R. Dasmunsi said that the wage hike would increase the financial implication for the Centre by Rs 17,798 crore annually and the arrears with effect from January 2006 would cost Rs 29,373 crore.

The minimum entry level salary of a government has also been increased to Rs 7,000 as against proposed by the commission headed by Justice B.N. Srikrishna, who submitted the report in March this year. This means that the employee at the lowest level would have a salary that would be beyond Rs 10,000, including allowances. The rate of annual increment has also been hiked from 2.5 per cent to the 3 per cent by the government.

The government under the modified Assured Career Progression scheme has also approved at least three assured promotions for all defence forces personnel and civilian employees. While civilians would get this after 10, 20 and 30 years of service, defence forces jawans would be promoted under the ACP after 8, 16 and 24 years.

The salaries of the Brigadiers has also been increased as the government have agreed to put them in pay band 4 (Rs 39,200-67,000) as against the suggested pay band 3 (Rs 15,600 - 39,100). A separate pay scale for the DGPs, PCCFs, GM (Railways), members of the boards of income tax, customs and central excise, postal and ordnance factories among others have also been carved out.

As against the pay scale of Rs 24,050-26,000 the revised pay scale would take them to the level of Rs 80,000 in two years as against three years.

Though the sources denied to share other details of the conference or the modification to the pay commission report, the addition over the commission’s proposals would result in an increase of 1.83 times of the net pay for the armed forces staff and a considerable increase for civil servants also.

The pay commission, submitted by Justice B N Srikrishna on March 24, had originally advocated that the pay for the defence forces be hiked up by 1.74 times, computed on the basis of the inflationary factors.

Showing anger over the pay commission report, armed forces staff called for a better deal considering the adversity factor involved in their services, followed by protest rallies by retired personnel.

The tri-services chiefs also lobbied with the Defence Minister.

The Government then set up a dynamic group led by Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar to investigate the anomalies signalized by various sections of the government servants, including those from the defence services

Centre hikes DA rate by 6 percent
New Delhi, Mar 7 :dearness allowance The Union Cabinet today gave its approval to hike the rate of dearness allowance (DA) by six per cent.

The cabinet gave not to release of additional instalment of to the Central Government employees and dearness relief to pensioners due from January 1 this year at the rate of 6 per cent over the existing rate of 41 per cent, thus, the rate of DA from January 1 this year will be 47 per cent.

The Central Government employees and pensioners will become entitled to higher amount of dearness allowance and relief respectively January 1 this year.

The combined impact on the exchequer on account of both dearness allowance and dearness relief would be of the order of Rs. 3297.12 crore in a full year and Rs. 3846.66 crore in the financial year 2008-2009 ( for a period of 14 months from January 2008 to February, 2009). (AN

PM To Chair Meeting On Armed Forces’ Pay Package

The government may announce the new pay package on 15 August for armed forces.

Armed forces had expressed dissatisfaction over the Sixth Pay Commission report and sought the revise of pay structure recommended by commission. The country has a total of 12 lakh personnel of the armed forces.

A meeting to discuss about salaries and perks of armed forces is scheduled on Wednesday. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will chair the high-level meeting to take final decision on the salary issue. The meeting will also be attended by Defence Minister A.K. Antony, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and Cabinet Secretary K. Chandrashekhar.

The pay commission had submitted the report on May 24 and recommended 40 percent hike in the salaries. The hike becomes 20 per cent after imposing some taxes on hiked salaries. The armed forces had sought the intervention of defence ministry and submitted a joint memorandum to defence minister Antony. Defence minister had assured them some improvements in the original recommendations of commission.

The service chiefs and personnel below officer rank (PBOR) had also expressed their dissatisfaction on the pay structure issue. The army is should, now, be ready to get revised pay structure in terms of independence gift.

The film itself

This film scans Raj Sharma's Ranbir Kapoor life from the time he is 18 till the time he turns 30. At 18, Raj is a young boy from Punjab just out of high school who has only one thing on his mind – girls, girls and more girls. As they set out for Switzerland, their group of characters is completely believable. Sightseeing or increasing their cultural awareness is the last thing on their mind. They want to have fun. Here, he(Minissha Lamba) encounters Mahi who is from Amritsar. And the film begins to sag. There is no way Minissha Lamba comes even close to being the bubbly effervescent girl-next-door. She looks far older to Ranbir. Also, the chemistry between them is zero, zilch, non-existent.

Then at another stage in his life, he meets Radhika Bipasha Basu. Though Bipasha also looks older than Ranbir, at least their chemistry works. But Raj is too much in a hurry to climb the ladder and commitment isn't exactly high on his list of priorities. So, he moves on…

Finally, he encounters Gayatri [Deepika Padukone ]. There is an old saying about 'Birds of a feather flock together'. For the first time in his life, Raj is truly in love. But the path of true love doesn't ever run smoothly. And Raj realises the disastrous consequences of his earlier lifestyle….

A flawed script

While Raj Sharma is the yuppy techie from Punjab on the road to success, his character is totally believable. But then he undergoes a change of heart and you find it difficult to relate to him anymore. Whatever Raj does as an act of repentance or penitence is a trifle ridiculous. And none of the women is a real or a believable character either. The stories about women who could never get over their 'pehla pyaar' were quite appropriate during the Kabhi Kabhi days. But now, they just don't hold true anymore.

Mindless entertainers seem to be the statement makers for a long time now. Adding to the list is 'God Tussi Great Ho' directed by Rumy Jaffrey. The movie stars Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and Sohail Khan in the lead. The movie has been in the making for a long time now. The promotion has been low key, any hopes?

Arun Prajapati (Salman Khan) has been trying to be a successful TV anchor but success has always eluded him. He only blames God for this. Arun is head over heels in love with Alia (Priyanka Chopra), who is a TV anchor and well-known star working in the same channel but he has never been able to express his love for her. Destiny plays a cruel game with him when Rocky is appointed as an anchor for the channel. Arun starts believing that Rocky will win over Alia. Circumstances go out of hand for Arun and he gets thrown out of the channel.

He has nobody to blame but God. And very soon he has an encounter with the God Almighty. An argument ensues between the two. God then decides to give Arun the power to run earth for seven days as Arun claims he can do a better job. After Arun becomes God, he becomes successful. He puts Rocky into an uneasy spot and wins Alia's heart. Also, he grants everybody's wish, and much to his dismay this becomes the biggest problem of his life.

A few moments of laughter and fun is what God Tussi Great Ho is all about. The director has etched in some crazy scenes here and there in a plot line that makes very little sense with few songs attached to add to the runtime of the movie. The first half is spent in telling us about the failures of our hero Arun and how he gets the power of God. After all this, you expect a good second half but it disappoints. The pace is slow and the songs in the later half are bad! A few scenes between Salman Khan and Anupam Kher are good. But that is all the movie has got to offer. As a whole, although entertaining, it fails to hold the viewers attention. It's the script that lets the director down more than anything else.

Cinematography is good. Dialogues are very hilarious at times. Music by Sajid-Wajid is strictly okay, doesn't live up to their usual standard.

Coming to the performances, the movie hardly has any scope for the actors except Salman's character. Salman Khan has the meatiest role and he carries it off like he usually does. His chemistry with Anupam Kher is good. The legendary Bachchan can carry off any role and he suits the role of God. Anupam Kher is great. Priyanka Chopra's role doesn't demand any acting talent. Sohail Khan is okay.

Overall, God Tussi Great Ho is an average entertainer. A few funny scenes make the Bruce Almighty rip-off worth a dekho for Salman Khan fans

What better game to sit down and play on a sick day than the official game of the, well, Games. Olympic Games that is. When it comes to this years Olympics, your first reaction (if you’re not actually in Beijing) is to switch on the TV to watch. But let’s face it, if there’s no synchronized swimming, beach volleyball or weightlifting taking place, what’s the point? Far too boring. Which is why I was excited to unwrap this game, which promised to let me 'Live the Olympic dream'.

This isn’t the first game to be based on this year's Olympics – last year Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games hit the shelves. However this is the first game which sets out to simulate the 2008 Olympic Games in a realistic fashion. And while graphically it’s quite a treat, gameplay-wise it leaves a bit to be desired.

You can compete in a wide variety of sports (38), from the 100m freestyle to the 800m track. Each comes with a nicely rendered in-game intro: It’s almost as if you’re watching the actual games on TV! However once you actually start competing it all turns into a massive button mashing exercise. Now I’m not sure if it was just me, but this turned out to be quite difficult. Button mashing is usually easy. This game makes it quite hard. You button mash to gain speed when you run, you twiggle sticks to lift weights, and you bash more buttons to do the butterfly.

I suppose it’s difficult to come up with practical ways to simulate basic human behaviour (like running) on a controller – most games take running for granted, whereas this one has to make the running (and swimming, and jumping…) a honed skill. It’s quite unusual and daunting. There is fun to be had tackling each rather varied event (online play is included), but the way to go seems to be the 'Olympic Games' mode, where you guide your team through the whole Olympics (minus some vital sports like synchronized swimming).

It's a bit weird is that you build power and speed as you go – so you’re essentially starting with a lame-ass team that needs work from day 1. It gives you something to achieve I suppose, but you’d hope that if you’re at the Games in the first place you’d already be at the top of your game. Maybe my sporting knowledge is just lacking here, but I’m pretty sure it’s not. All in all, an unusual and difficult sporting game – but perfect if you want to feel a little closer to the action. Just be prepared for sore fingers, and – if you don’t take breaks – a good case of RSI.

The Centre assured that the sixth pay commission report would be "beneficial" for the employees as administration is keen to provide comprehensive and fine salary packages to attract quality human resource.

The upcoming pay commission would give recommendations regarding the pay structure of government employees including industrial as well as non- industrial central government employees, all-India services, armed forces personnel and employees in the Union Territories.

Moreover, the commission would consider the pay structure for Indian audit and accounts department, regulatory bodies established by Acts in Parliament and Supreme Court employees.

Normally, a central government employee’s total salary comprises a basic salary, a 51% dearness pay along with basic and a 41% dearness allowance of the total.

The sixth pay Commission will result in a hike of 28% in basic salary of central government staff in various categories. The central 6th pay commission scales may also help employees to fight with the growing inflation.

The expected pay scale table of the sixth pay commission pay structure may also result in a decent increase in the salaries of employees working in private sector.

A high level meeting on Wednesday led by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh along with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister AK Antony and Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram discussed the pay commission information and the suggestions of the empowered group of Secretaries that entered the anomalies and other subjects.

A senior Union minister said that Cabinet is ready to sanction the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations today.

The commission had recommended several changes like staggered timings for women, introduction of performance related incentives, forcing central para-military services to recruit personnel from ex-servicemen after they complete 17 years of service in the armed forces and cutting down the number of gazetted holidays after nearly 17 days to three.

Indian Economy is booming and the prices have been rising for the past two years at a much faster rate. The price of Real estate is rising. A common man can’t buy a house unless he takes a huge loan. The loan he will need all his life to re-pay.

There are shopping malls coming up (which are only increasing the spending of middle income groups).

The stock markets witnessed a very fast increase in valuations in year 2007. The start of 2008 wasn’t good for Indian markets, but still many stocks are near their all time highs.

The government should revise the pay scales for Government employees with the Sixth Pay commission recommendations at the earliest. The cost of living for every household is rising with every passing day. The wages for government employees are the same.

Sixth Pay Commission has been set up to revise the pay scales for the following category of employees
(a) Central government employees – industrial and non-industrial
(b) Personnel belonging to the All India Services
(c) Personnel belonging to the Armed Forces
(d) Personnel of the Union Territories
(e) Officers and employees of the Indian Audit and Accounts Department
(f) Officers and employees of the regulatory bodies set up under Acts of Parliament.

Persons working in private companies are getting paid much more. I can agree that they work a lot and offer a good value of work for the money paid to them.

Indian government employees should be offered decent salary based on the work they are doing.

It will be good to keep the age of retirement at 58. Making it 60 isn’t a very wise decision while many government departments came up with VRS scheme recently. Chance should be given to the young generation. Most of them are only working in some private companies or have left India for better wages abroad.

The sixth pay commission may cause a big burden on government, but the employees have not seen revision for pay scales for a long time.

Sixth Pay Commission Report: What will employees get on April 4, 2008

The government has declared that the Sixth Pay Commission would submit its report by April 4, 2008. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Mr. P K Bansal, the Minister of State for Finance said, �The Commission is to finalise and submit its report within 18 months of its constitution, that is 4th April, 2008.�

About effectuation of the Pay Commission�s suggestions, Mr. Bansal stated, �Since the report is to be submitted, the time frame for its implementation cannot be stated.�

Regarding the terms of reference of the Sixth Pay Commission, he said that the Commission was analyzing the interest and requirement to approve any interim relief until its commendations were completed.

Employees can expect a decent rise in salary as the Elections are coming near. Government may not miss this chance to give additional benefits to employees in all pay scales to grab a bigger vote bank. The salary increase in Sixth Pay commission report 2008 may bring cheer among various government departments.

The new 6th pay commission pay scale table may also result in increase in salary for employees in private sector. Big companies are paying well but there are still many workers in small companies who are finding it very difficult to run their house on meagre income.

On media reports regarding big increase in salaries of civil service staff, Mr. Bansal told that the Commission is yet to settle down and present its report, so the media might be doubtful.

In October 2006, the Sixth Pay Commission was formed to suggest comprehensive changes in salary structure of the government employees.

It would also provide suggestions regarding the pay arrangement of government workers including industrial as well as non- industrial central government employees, Armed Forces personnel, All India Services, and employees in the Union Territories.

Additionally, the Commission would study the pay structure for Indian Audit and Accounts Department, regulatory bodies establish by Act s in the Parliament and Supreme Court employees, Mr. Bansal said.

Central 6th pay commission scales may trigger state governments to offer salary hike to their employees. The expectations are higher and things may be clear by April 4, when the expected pay scale tables 2008 under VIth pay commission will be unveiled

Pay Panel Report To Face Cabinet Test Today

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh held a meeting with defence minister A.K. Antony and finance minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday, regarding the pay commission recommendations for Central government employees, armed forces employees as well as paramilitary staff.

A senior Union minister stated that Cabinet is ready to sanction the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations today.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will declare the award during his Independence Day speech on Friday, August 15.

Around 5.4 million government workers will get their pay increases and the administration will have to distribute an additional Rs 20,000 crore.

The armed forces were sad with the new pay structures but now sources said that a compromise has been made between the administration and the services.

The government has accepted the demands of the defence forces.

But it's a bit less than the 15% extra they demanded earlier.

So, if in April the promised hike for a colonel was Rs 15,000, now it's going to be about Rs 19,000.

Nadal and Federer win twice at Olympics

BEIJING (AP)—Rafael Nadal took the court at 10:30 a.m. and hit his final shot more than 11 hours later. Roger Federer’s first day of Olympic tennis was slightly shorter but just as successful.

The two rivals, both bidding to become Olympic medalists for the first time, were winners in singles and doubles in the opening round Monday.

Playing the first match on center court, Nadal overcame numerous missed chances by sweeping the final four games to beat Potito Starace of Italy 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

The top-seeded Federer made his entrance less than an hour later. He beat Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 6-2, then received congratulations from one of the spectators, U.S. basketball star LeBron James.

Federer leaped to whack an overhead slam on match point, sealing his win with Swiss teammate Stanislas Wawrinka over Simone Bolelli and Andreas Seppi of Italy, 7-5, 6-1.

A little later, Spaniards Nadal and Tommy Robredo beat Jonas Bjorkman and Robin Soderling of Sweden 6-3, 6-3..

Nadal played doubles but not singles at the Athens Olympics in 2004. At Beijing he’s staying in the athletes’ village, savoring the atmosphere and hoping to sustain a summer surge that has assured him of the No. 1 ranking next week.

“I am very happy to be here,” Nadal said. “Just trying to enjoy 100 percent the experience, and later try my best on court.”

Other singles winners included Venus and Serena Williams, along with Novak Djokovic, the biggest impediment to a Nadal-Federer final in singles.

No. 7 seed Venus Williams, playing her first match since winning Wimbledon for the fifth time, beat Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 6-2. Williams, who swept the gold medals in singles and doubles in 2000, showed no sign of the knee injury that sidelined her in recent weeks.

“I feel really good about the match—not a lot of unforced errors, no service breaks,” Williams said. “I did the right things to come out on top.”

Her sister Serena, seeded fourth, won all four games when her match resumed after an overnight rain interruption, and she beat Olga Govortsova of Belarus, 6-3, 6-1.

Like Nadal, Serena Williams was playing her first singles match at the Olympics. She won a gold medal in doubles in 2000 with sister Venus.

“It’s a great thing going out there playing for your country,” Serena said.

The No. 3-seeded Djokovic beat Robby Ginepri of the United States 6-4, 6-4. American Sam Querrey lost to Igor Andreev of Russia 6-4, 6-4, leaving James Blake as the only U.S. male to reach the second round of singles.

Blake and Querrey were eliminated in doubles by Andreev and Nikolay Davydenko, 6-3, 6-4.

On the women’s side, Jill Craybas—who learned only Wednesday she had made the American team—lost to No. 13 Patty Schnyder of Switzerland 6-3, 6-2.

Jelena Jankovic of Serbia began her reign as the world’s No. 1 player by beating Zimbabwe’s Cara Black 6-3, 6-3. Jankovic, seeded second in Beijing, supplanted Ana Ivanovic atop the rankings Monday.

Ivanovic withdrew from the tournament Sunday because of a thumb injury.

It was a good day for the Chinese women. Li Na delighted the center-court crowd by upsetting No. 3-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 7-6 (5), 6-4. Also advancing were Zheng Jie, a semifinalist this year at Wimbledon, and Peng Shuai.

Nicolas Massu of Chile opened his bid to repeat as Olympic champion by beating Steve Darcis of Belgium 6-4, 7-5. But Massu and Fernando Gonzalez, who won the gold medal in doubles at Athens, were beaten by Tursunov and Mikhail Youzhny 7-6 (5), 6-4.

No. 5 David Ferrer and No. 6 Andy Murray lost in singles.

With his early start, Nadal at times appeared to need a wakeup call. He struggled on the backhand side, and shook his head or rolled his eyes when usually reliable strokes misfired. Because of Beijing’s oppressive humidity, Nadal said, he was changing his shirt every 10 minutes.

A highlight-reel rally got him going in the third set. Nadal sprinted into the alley near the net in pursuit of a ball and scooped a forehand winner cross-court as he braked to avoid running into the post, then fell to his back. He rose and threw a jubilant fist, leaving behind a splotch of sweat on the concrete.

After failing to convert seven consecutive break-point chances in the second and third sets, he broke for a 4-2 lead in the final set. He erased a 15-40 deficit on his serve in the next game, then broke again for the victory.

“I had a lot of opportunities. I didn’t convert, so that was tough,” Nadal said. “But I was winning the serves without problems. He had more problems than me when he was serving, so that gave me confidence.”

Seeded second, Nadal is on a roll after beating Federer in the finals at the French Open and Wimbledon. The latter result compounded Federer’s yearlong slump, and regardless of the outcome at Beijing, he’ll be supplanted atop the rankings by Nadal next week.

“It’s just a matter of losing some matches where I feel like I shouldn’t have lost,” Federer said. “And then sometimes it plays a trick in your mind where you think maybe you’re not playing that well actually, but it’s actually not the case. So it’s a matter of keeping yourself in a positive mindset.”

Federer has won only two tournaments in 2008, and an Olympic gold medal would help him salvage the year after he was shut out of the medal chase at Sydney in 2000 and at Athens in 2004

BEIJING (AP)—After seven years of buildup and billions of dollars in preparations, world leaders and China’s elite gathered Friday for the most lavish opening ceremony in Olympic history. But Beijing residents without a ticket were asked to stay home.

Millions of workers in the teeming Chinese capital were given the day off and many shops were shut Friday, as Beijing traffic officials advised people to reduce outdoor visits and watch the opening ceremony at home on television in an effort to reduce congestion.

Wang Lijun, who works in the real estate business in Beijing, said he was thinking about going to watch Friday night’s extravaganza on a giant screen at one of 24 live sites set up around the city. But he had not made up his mind yet — and the opening ceremony was not that important for him, anyway.

“It’s the actual competition that’s worth watching,” he said. “I don’t have any tickets to Olympics events but my family and I will watch them on TV. We are looking forward to watching the sports that China will excel at like ping pong and badminton.

Roads in the city of 17 million were closed around the National Stadium, the Bird’s Nest, and traffic restrictions in force near central Tiananmen Square and the Great Hall of the People where Chinese President Hu Jintao met with foreign leaders.

Away from the highly-manicured games precinct, the Olympics buzz was there, but more subdued.

Du Chao, 30, who runs one of the few small shops opened in Beijing’s main business district, said he would close the shop early because he expects his usual customers to be at home watching the ceremony. Business hadn’t been good this month because of the games, he said. Still, he was excited.

“These types of things happened only once in a thousand years,” Du said as he sold water and ice cream. “I’ve even bought a small television so I can watch all these football matches in my shop.”

Chen Xiaowei, a mother who brought her two kids from the western city of Xi’an to see the volleyball, said they will stay in the hotel.

“We will go home tonight to watch the opening ceremony together because we don’t want to run into crowds outside,” she said. “Also it’s much cooler in the hotel.”

For Chinese dissidents, human rights lawyers, and other activists who have dared to challenge the rule of the Communist Party, which has spent more than $40 billion on the games and enlisted the support of the entire nation, the start of the Olympics meant more surveillance and tighter restrictions.

“I have no plan for tonight,” Jiang Tianyong, a human rights lawyer, said from his home. “It’s not my Olympic Games. It’s not the games for the ordinary people.”

Jiang who lives in Changping, a Beijing suburb, said police were coming to question him in the afternoon.

“I don’t know if I will come home tonight,” he said. “I want to say something: International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge has said the games will bring fundamental changes to China. I will reserve my opinions on that.”

While festivities were muted and one of the Olympics slogans of “I participate, I contribute, I enjoy” seemed unlikely for most, some residents still were trying to make the best of the date—the eighth day of the eighth month of the eighth year of the new century. Chinese consider eight to be an auspicious number because it sounds like the word for prosperity.

The official Xinhua News Agency said a record 16,400 couples had registered to get married Friday.

Others started to place bets on Olympics events.

Robert Zhang, 25, who works in the retail business, was watching a giant screen in downtown Beijing. He said he was going to put a bet on the German and U.S. soccer teams, because eight is a lucky number.

“I believe that eight is a good luck number but today is 88 days since the Wenchuan earthquake, so I have my doubts,” he said, referring to China’s May 12 earthquake in Sichuan province that killed nearly 70,000.

The Olympics have been a huge source of national pride, and many Chinese say it is the realization of a 100-year dream for the country. The concept dates from Zhang Boling, a sports enthusiast who founded Nankai University in the port city of Tianjin, who wrote in an article in 1907-08 on his dream for a Chinese Olympic team.

The idea held particular resonance at the time with China, as its ancient imperial system was in crisis, the country was divided by Western powers and had been defeated by Japan in battle.

Two rather one-sided affairs at Colombo and Galle but now the series is delicately poised at 1-1 as India and Sri Lanka fight for the series. Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene says his team need to put pressure on a resurgent India in the crucial third and final Test to maintain their impressive home record.
Sri Lanka have lost just one of their last seven home Test series since August 2004, the lone defeat coming against Pakistan two years ago.
The Sri Lankan captain said his bowlers would look for early breakthroughs to keep pressure on the India's middle-order batsmen, who have yet to fire in the series.
Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir played key roles in India's win, adding 167 for the opening wicket in the first innings and 90 in the second. "Sehwag batted really well and took his chances in Galle. India are getting some good starts and that is something we will think about," said Jayawardene. "If we get early breakthroughs we can manage to keep the rest of their batsmen pretty quiet. If we keep that pressure on the top of the order we have a very good chance."
Jayawardene praised his spinners for keeping India's formidable middle-order batsmen under control in the two matches. Unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis has grabbed 18 wickets and Muttiah Muralitharan 16.
Venkatsai Laxman is the only Indian middle-order batsman to have made a half-century in four innings, while Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly have yet to perform up to their potential. Sachin Tendulkar is just 97 runs short of the record for the most test runs, a feat he would like to attain during this test match.
"The credit should go to our bowlers as we kept a lot of pressure on them (middle-order batsmen). They had starts, but we still managed to get those wickets," said Jayawardene.
"We played really good cricket in the first Test and fought well in Galle. We are now looking forward to this one and have to be positive with our approach. It is going to be an interesting one."
Team News:
Sri Lanka will make one change from the team that played in Galle as they have left out paceman Nuwan Kulasekara, who could take just one wicket in two matches.
"We are leaving out Kulasekera, but have not made the choice between the two pacemen (Thilan Thushara and Dammika Prasad)," said Jayawardene.
India are set to name wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel in their playing eleven in place of Dinesh Karthik, who dropped a couple of crucial catches in the previous matches.
"The only possible change in the team is Patel coming in place of Karthik," India captain Anil Kumble said.
India have clinched just one Test series after being 1-0 down in the past seven years, but Kumble said his team was determined to do it again. "In terms of confidence and strategy, we have done whatever we can to ensure we win the Test and series. That is the bottom line," he said.
"We did that against Australia at home in 2001 after being 1-0 down. All of us are looking forward to going home with the series win."

Review: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

I haven't seen the previous two movies in the Mummy series, although people have recommended them to me as rollicking old-fashioned action-adventure movies, from the same Saturday-afternoon-matinee roots as the Indiana Jones series -- not exactly brain teasers, but good silly fun. The good news is that if you too haven't seen the preceding movies, you can watch The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor without fear of getting confused or lost or not understanding the recurring characters. The bad news is that regardless of whether you've watched the other films, the third Mummy entry is a headache-inducing mess that piles on unimpressive special effects to stretch a slight and often incomprehensible storyline.

The movie begins with an extended backstory: the history of the Dragon Emperor from thousands of years ago, in which a ruthless tyrant (Jet Li) bargained with an infamous witch (Michelle Yeoh) in his ambitious drive to seek immortality. The backstory, narrated in a manner befitting the History Channel, goes on for far longer than necessary. (Hellboy II did this so much better and faster, and with cool puppetry too.) It's a full 10 minutes before the story begins and we encounter the leads from the previous Mummy films, Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and his wife Evelyn (Maria Bello this go-round), who have retired from the action business and are trying to lead humdrum lives in the English countryside.

However, they're lured back into their Nick-and-Nora-wannabe roles to deliver an artifact to China, where their grown-up son Alex (Luke Ford) is secretly excavating an ancient emperor's tomb ... guess whose tomb that might be? Of course there's a curse, and a giant diamond, and Evelyn's brother Jonathan (John Hannah) from the previous two films just happens to be running an Egyptian-themed nightclub in Shanghai so he's pulled back into the action too. Next thing you know, the whole crowd is out to stop the ancient Emperor mummy (who is more like one of the cursed Pirates of the Caribbean characters than a traditionally embalmed mummy) from regaining all his powers of immortality and raising his invincible golden clay army that will take over the world.

The movie tries to entertain us with a series of daring escapades and breathtaking spectacles, but unfortunately these attempts fall far short of their aspirations. A long chase sequence across Shanghai during Chinese New Year is meant to be a breakneck adventure, but the camera careens so wildly and awkwardly that I lost track of the action -- wait, where did Rick go? What's that the emperor is throwing ... bits of his face? Later in the film, the CGI effects descend upon the storyline with a vengeance, and everything looks so similar and so fake that when a character exclaims "Shangri-La!" you want to murmur, "it's only a model." And let's not discuss the eyeroll-inducing CGI Yeti.

But the CGI isn't the weakest and most damaging part of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor -- that honor goes to the screenplay. The actors sell the dialogue as capably as they can, trying to emulate the snappy lines and easy wit of 1930s romantic comedies or at least classic action films. Unfortunately, the lines are so trite and dumb and unfunny that they elicit puzzlement rather than humor. Even Maria Bello's Emma Peel-like delivery can't save these lines. The film also relies on jokes that are just plain dumb, like a barfing yak. Other moments that might be funny with the right timing often fly by in the middle of one of the frenetic action sequences and we don't get time to register the gag, much less to laugh.

During the film's climactic fight scenes, as CGI tepidly battles CGI, one scene lights up the screen briefly. Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh's encounter involves no computer-generated creatures, and is shot not at hyperspeed but in slow motion. The exaggerated motions a la Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon seem positively organic in comparison to the rest of the film. It's a lovely moment ... and then we cut to more cliched one-liners and uninspired effects. I don't understand why you'd cast Jet Li in a role that wastes his great screen presence by covering him in bad special effects most of the time, when he's far more compelling in his own skin. In fact, I would love to see the entire cast in a better movie with a stronger script.

It's hard not to compare this movie to Hellboy II for more reasons than the similar prologues, which made me wish I could sneak over to an adjacent theater and watch the Guillermo del Toro film again. Both movies are about a villain who intends to unleash an invincible inhuman army upon the world. However, the elf-prince in Hellboy II at least seems to have an understandable reason. Both movies feature main characters trying to sort out relationship problems at the same time they're battling forces of evil. But the difference there is key -- the characters in Hellboy II had more emotional depth, and their relationships with each other and with humanity were what ultimately drove the film. In The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the characters are glorified cardboard cutouts, and it's hard to care about why they're all bickering -- the action of the film doesn't reflect or tie into the emotional conflicts.

At the screening I attended for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, one person in my row seemed to be enjoying himself thoroughly in the audience: a five-year-old who hadn't seen enough good action-adventure films to feel jaded by this tired retread. But if you're too old for kindergarten, you might want to skip this movie and catch Hellboy II instead. Or rent a good Jet Li film, or even revisit Raiders of the Lost Ark. I've been pleasantly surprised by a number of films this summer that were more fun than I might have expected, but this movie was an unfortunate letdown.

Ugly aur Pagli is a film that perhaps makes a conscious effort to be different but in the process ends up being vague and mindless. Was it a romantic comedy? Not really because the humour didn't come across and the chemistry was never established. Was it a chick flick? Maybe in the last ten minutes but by then even the girls seemed uninterested.

Rather this one seemingly explored a female-dominated master-slave relationship between the lead pair though without any sexual overtones to it (despite Mallika Sherawat's presence). In absence of the sexual gratification, what kept this masochism ignited remains a mystery. In fact the girl keeps slapping the boy ceaselessly and for strange reasons the makers believe that each spank is laugh-inducing. The boy sustains his submissive side, unconditionally and unreasonably and without any self-defense or self-respect. This one is a case of no sex - only violence.

Kabir (Ranvir Shorey) is raised by his parents to a certain age as a girl. Perhaps that has made him somewhat sissy which could be the only explanation why he allows himself to be dominated by the kinky and quirky ways of an obnoxious girl Kuhu (Mallika Sherawat). So Kabir ends up wearing high-heeled ladies sandals, riding cycle without seat and moving around the town in a petticoat. It's puzzling why he takes Kuhu's crap because there's no incentive involved. Kuhu hasn't confessed love. In fact she is even averse to the idea of kissing. What interests her is writing grotesque futuristic scripts which she wants Kabir to sell to Bollywood banners like Yash Ram Films. Ironically Mr Yash Ram Chopra is modeled as Pritish Nandy, the producer of this film.

Half ways through the film you are still unable to make sense of the story. Kabir attempts to analyze the scenes with his nonstop voiceover in the backdrop throughout the film as if it were the director's commentary on a special DVD edition. But even that doesn't help. And despite its 8-reel runtime, the movie tends to drag monstrously.

Suddenly the film sobers down with a flashback account to justify Kuhu's absurd attitude which isn't acceptable though. The culmination is as much deceiving as much as the pre-climax scene where it shows Mallika Sherawat in a salwar suit (yes, you read that right). As the film ends with the much prolonged and practiced smooch scene, you feel that Mallika Sherawat has arrived. At least in the sense that she started off with 17 smooches in one film and today offers one smooch after 99 slaps.

The film tries too hard to be funny but the gags falls flat at most occasions. Moreover the sluggish pace and the non-existent storyline literally test your patience. And why the hell did they make Ranvir Shorey dance to typical Bollywood tracks? The actor appears absolutely uncomfortable and clearly can't dance saala. Of all the stupid spoofs that the film attempts, the only one that works is when Sushmita Mukherjee attempts to impersonate Sharmila Tagore. Ranvir repeats his loser act but to good effect. Even Mallika Sherawat is bearable this time till the point she attempts emoting.

A friend asked me if I would recommend the movie and my reply was Mallika's favourite line from the film "marna hai kya?" Ugly aur Pagli lives up to its name. It's an utterly 'unappealing' film that will make you go 'mad'.

Kismat Konnection falls under the league of those feel-good NRI love stories having a customary Indian narration in some foreign location. The kinds where every person the hero even randomly stumbles upon speaks to him in Hindi. The kinds where the hero is still named as Raj Malhotra. Where’s the story you ask? Left to chance... fate, destiny, luck or Kismat as you may call it.

Raj Malhotra (Shahid Kapoor) is the university topper but somehow luck isn’t favouring him. Five years post graduation he is still jobless and waiting for his first assignment as an architect. Kismet connects as he comes across Priya (Vidya Balan) who happens to be his lucky charm. In her presence even the impossible turns achievable for Raj. Raj desperately seeks her company in all his endeavours from employment to affection.

Just when you start liking the breezy premise, the director decides to add (rotten) meat to the story by adding a hackneyed love triangle to stretch the screenplay by a few more clichéd scenes. Priya is already engaged with another guy but we are familiar with the fact that the heroine will ultimately end up with the hero. And since the third angle just happens to be some side-hero, he’s also given a bad conduct certificate of two-timing to make his exit easier.

On a parallel note Raj gets the contract to design a shopping mall which incidentally happens to be on the same land where Priya supports a community center. Surprisingly the film derives the plot on the same grounds of the old age home premise in Lagey Raho Munnabhai and more shockingly Vidya Balan ends up playing the same character as in the earlier film. Either director Aziz Mirza should have derived from some other source or if the inspiration was so compelling, he should have cast some other actress. This is déjà vu on the face.

Finally Raj wins both, Priya and the project by delivering a sentimental speech in the climax where he talks about everything from global warming to US superpower but for the practicality of the project. Was there a cross connection here? And the film opts for such a convenient conclusion that you wonder if there was any problem at the first place.

But Gautam Gambhir has shrugged off the defeat as a one-off and says the Indian team is positive despite the thrashing at Colombo. He also emphasised the need to bat more patiently against Sri Lanka's spin twins.
Sri Lanka captain Jayawardene is expecting a good fightback from the Indians. "I am sure they are very disappointed after the first Test, but we know how good they are. They will definitely come very strong at us and we have to be prepared for that," Jayawardene told reporters. Jayawardene, who has scored 9 centuries at SSC has an enviable record at Galle too, averaging 99.21 in 12 cricket tests.
Pitch: India's batsmen have been warned to expect a "spinner's pitch" for the second test in Galle. Galle ground manager Jayanda Warnaweera, a former Sri Lanka spinner, said he has prepared a surface that will suit the pair. "Although it should help the seamers on the first day, it will start spinning a lot by day three," he added.
Team News: Sri Lanka included uncapped paceman Dammika Prasad earlier this week but it looks unlikely that he will play after Jayawardene hinted that Sri Lanka will field an unchanged team.
Dinesh Karthik was hardly impressive in the first test. He dropped two regulation catches and threw away his wicket with a reckless shot in the first innings. Parthiv Patel would be fancying his chances.
Weather: Thunderstorms have been forecast for all five days of the test match so expect quite a few stop-start days.

Mendis was introduced into the attack in the 11th over after Vaas and Kulasekara did a tidy job with a new ball. Sehwag, on 13, was itching to go and heaved at an off-break on the middle and leg line. The ball popped up behind the keeper who ran backwards to hold on. The close in-fielders made a polite enquiry which was turned down by the umpire before captain Jayawardene requested for the reviews. The Sri Lankan fielders thought the ball hit the back of the bat after hitting Sehwag's pad but the slow motion replays confirmed that there was no bat involved. A releived Sehwag let out a wry smile as he walked down the pitch to talk to his partner.

Kismat Konnection starts on a promising note but soon resorts to conventional formula. The second half drags with Raj’s repeated attempts to win the construction contract. The love triangle is clearly off-track and is simply enforced to manipulate that mandatory sangeet song sequence to appease the family and NRI audiences. Thankfully the script steers away from sermonizing on bhartiya sanskriti et al, an avid tendency with such genres. On the upside Binod Pradhan’s cinematography is eye-pleasing and Pritam’s music is soothing to the ears.

This time around Shahid Kapoor displays a hangover of... no not Shah Rukh but Amitabh Bachchan in the initial reels and also does a complete take on his extended Namak Halaal dialogue. Nevertheless he soon comes to his usual self and gives a sincere performance. And those Ahmed Khan choreographed gyrations can never go wrong. As against the notion, Vidya Balan carries a graceful charm and is natural as ever. Om Puri is effective in his imposing character with a Punjabi accent. Vishal Malhotra repeats his friendly act for the nth time. Age has caught up with Juhi Chawla and it shows onscreen

After fielding the same team for 6 consecutive Tests, England were forced to make two changes to their squad for the 2nd Test at Headingley -one change to accommodate Flintoff and the other to replace the unfit Sidebottom. Darren Pattinson's selection ahead of seasoned campaigners like Hoggard and Harmison created a furore in the press with some of the ex-players blasting the selectors.
In a sudden U-turn by the selectors, Steve Harmison has been recalled while Pattinson and Tremlett have been omitted for the 3rd Test at Edgbaston. Now England have so much to ponder on the team selection. They are unsure of Flintoff's batting form, Ambrose has not been among the runs of late while Michael Vaughan has looked all at sea against the South African pace battery. England's batting has blown hot and cold over the last two tests but the bowlers have lacked fire power at times and looked clueless against the disciplined South Africans.
South Africa on the other hand have no such worries. All their batsmen except Kallis made a hundred in either one of the 2 Tests. Though Kallis failed with the bat, he had delivered as the 5th bowler taking crucial wickets. South Africa at the moment don't seem to concerned with Dale Steyn's injury. They have aproven performer in Andre Nel and Mickey Arthur is very confident that Nel can more than match Steyn's aggression. South Africa look a settled and relaxed side going into the third Test.

Steve Harmison has not made it to the final XI with Collingwood and Sidebottom replacing Pattinson and the tired Broad.
South Africa are most likely to make just the one change, swapping the injured Steyn (broken thumb) with Andre Nel, who has promised to keep his temper under control.

It is profoundly infused with thrilling electronic sounds in low paced with an intrinsically 'Chinese' musical binge in its prelude. Talented Harshdeep Kaur gets a major break from her routine Sufi and devotional genre as she is the lead vocalist for this spunky sounding number. It's a quizzically paced experimentation where the tempo has been relaxed to get a different feel for a mushy romantic appeal.

It sounds like a typical Govinda 'jhatkas' song where Kunal Ganjawala brilliantly modulating voices set the mood and festivity for the song. Rekha Bharadwaj voices out as lead female vocalist while back up vocals of Nitz 'N' Sony, Earl and Arya makes it modish with frenzied rap wordings.

The celebratory mood of a lavish get-together is facilitated through synchronized 'shehnai' sounds with strong punches of 'bhangra' mood taking over the proceedings in 'Rangeeli Raat'. Shaan makes his solitary presence with Sivamani in a situational dance number 'Dance Master' that sounds more like 'Meter Down' (TAXI NO.9211) in its rhythmical patterns but the impact of hitting floors is bleak. This 'honey' for 'money' number fails to be gripping in its camouflaged packaging of westernized arrangements and typical Maharashtrian folksy touches.

Nitz 'n' Sony showed their prowess for instrumental works in SWAMI and now they improvise to great extent in exuding their immaculate class in 'Hope (instrumental)'. Its brilliant display of symphony by Naveen and Mumbai Cine Strings where varied instruments like piano, violin, flute, woodwinds in synchronized choral flows merges brilliantly to deliver a soulful signature feel for the film. This can be termed as one of the finest innovation and experimentation experienced in recent times that reflects varying moods through remarkable instrumental displays. The composer duo rightfully picked the most impressive track 'No Big Deal' for this instrumental version and delivers their best work in this concluding track of the album. Classy Touch!!!
